Hernando County Reading Festival

Looking for something fun and educational for the kids this weekend? How about the Hernando County Reading Festival!

This Saturday, February 28, 2009, at Nature Coast Technical High School, come on down for a full day of face painting, games, balloons, food and opportunities to visit many different children authors that will be available for book signings, including Bruce Hale, author of the Chet Gecko, Private Eye series! Bay News 9 meteorologist, Brian McClure will also be on site and available to answer any and all questions that refer to the weather!

Six year old Quint Paxton, will be selling his first book written about his cat Littlefoot as part of a community service project, all proceeds from his book will go to the SPCA where Quint found his furry little friend!

The festival will run from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., the first 300 children will receive goody bags! All activities and admission are free. For any questions please call (352)797-7018.

The 74th Annual Strawberry Festival will take Place this Week in Hillsborough County, Florida

Today, February 26, 2009, marks the kick off of the 74th Annual Strawberry Festival in Plant City, Hillsborough County, Florida!

The Strawberry Festival promotes 10 days of concerts, rides, food, good ol’ fashioned family fun and of course plenty of juicy, delicious strawberries! The main headliners this year will consist of Randy Travis, George Jones, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Larry Gatlin and The Gatlin Brothers, Jessica Simpson, Jeff Foxworthy, Ronnie McDowell and many others to brighten the stage with incredible entertainment!

Water Restrictions Still Remain the Same in Hernando and Citrus County Florida

The board meeting held by the Southwest Florida Water Management District (Swiftmud) on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, has determined that once a week lawn watering will continue through until June 30, 2009.

Designated watering days are as follows: If your house number ends in 0 or 1, you can water only on Monday; 2 or 3, water only on Tuesday; 4 or 5, water only on Wednesday; 6 or 7, water only on Thursday; 8 or 9, water only on Friday. Watering times are before 8:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m.

Car washing is limited to once a week as well, if your address is an even numbered address you may wash your car on Tuesday or Saturday; odd numbered addresses are allowed on Wednesday or Sunday.

Living Green in Citrus County Florida

We are entering a green revolution in 2009! Many people want to change their lifestyle and take on some of the ‘green’ ways of life. However, knowing where to start can sometimes be overwhelming.

On Thursday, February 26th, 2009 at the Old Courthouse Heritage Museum in Lecanto, Citrus County Florida, up on the 2nd floor, the Citrus County Extension Service office will be presenting “Shades of Green”, a 30 minute presentation to aid the public on how to live a greener life.

Dr. Joan Bradshaw will be touching on several different topics during this presentation, offering many different ideas on how to start a greener lifestyle. Coffee will be served during the discussion and there is no admission fee. The presentation will start at 10:30 a.m. and end at 11:30 a.m.

Hernando County Florida Peak Season Parking Fees Take Effect

It’s that time of year again when the Hernando County Parks Department begins their peak season parking fee at Pine Island! From now until November 14, 2009, a $2 per vehicle fee will be in effect from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. daily. The Rogers Park peak season fee will not begin to take effect until late March or early April and will continue on through September of 2009.

Annual parking passes for both parks are available at the tax collector’s office located at 7489 Forest Oaks Blvd. and at the Parks Department at the Government Center, room #260, in Brooksville, Hernando County, Florida. Passes are $40 and good for a year.

Two Great Ways to Spend the Weekend in Citrus and Hernando County Florida

Liberty Park Family Fun Fest

Kicking off this weekend, Friday, February 20, 2009 through Sunday February 22, 2009, The Inverness Olde Towne Association and Citrus County Builders Association will be hosting a Liberty Park Family Fun Fest and Business Expo at Liberty Park located at 286 N. Apopka Ave in Inverness, Citrus County, Florida!

This three day festival will run from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. daily, providing games, food, local business showcases, airboat rides, RV and Boat shows, classic cars, kayak demos, lawn mower races and many other activities. This year’s theme is “Life is Getting Better”.

Florida Forever Back Country Horsemen Equestrian Trail Pace

On February 21, 2009 in the Withlacoochee State Forest at the Smith Prairie Trailhead and Croom Rd. in Brooksville, Hernando County, Florida, the Florida Forever Back Country Horsemen (FFBCH) will be sponsoring their first Annual equestrian Trail Pace…a trail pace is similar to a hunt pace only their will be no jumps involved!

The trail provides 8-10 miles (the exact distance is a secret..shh) of beautiful forest for the four different pace divisions; Leisure Pace, Medium trail pace, Cavalry pace and Endurance pace. All styles of riding are welcome and the FFBCH are offering prizes for each division!

The entry fee is $25 for adults and $15 for juniors. All of the proceeds with aid in the funding of FFBCH volunteer efforts to help maintain horse trails in both the Hernando County and Citrus County area.

Citrus County Historical Society Tour of Majorie Kinnan Rawlins Home

On Tuesday, February 17, 2009 join the Citrus County Historical Society for a trip to Marjorie Kinnan Rawlins Historic State Park in Cross Creek!

Marjorie Kinnann Rawlins, reknowned author of many books and Pulitzer Prize winner for the litary works of The Yearling, was elected to the National Academy of Arts and Letters.

This guided tour of her home and property provided by the Historical Society will also include lunch at the Hitching Post Restaurant along with a visit to the Micanopy Historical Museum.
