The Brooksville Rotary Club is conducting their 30th Annual “Live on Air” Radio Auction this Saturday, March 27, 2009 at the Cortez Community Bank. This year the Rotary Club will be auctioning off over $56,000 worth of goodies! Fishing trips, art, medical services and even a year family membership at Southern Hills Plantation are only a few of the items listed!
The auction will start at 12:00 and run until 6:30 p.m. and aired on WWJB 1450 AM. How does it work? The DJ will call out each auctioned item and you will have 30 minutes to call in and submit your bid. Keep in mind, that there is a ‘bid minimum’ of 25% of the item’s retail value. All the proceeds will go to the Rotary Club charitable trust fund to be distributed to different local charities and community groups.
Have fun and good luck!

Brooksville, Hernando County, Florida residents are seeing the signs of the times! The first traffic cameras have been set in place at the SW corner of Broad St and Dr. M.L. King Jr Blvd! They certainly aren’t being sneaky about it, for drivers traveling north on Broad St. a sign has been posted, to warn you ahead of time.
This is the first of five sets of traffic cameras that are planned to be set at traffic intersections throughout the city of Brooksville. Two of these cameras are to be placed at Broad St. and Wiscon Rd and at Cobb Rd. and W Jefferson St. by April 23, 2009, two more are to be placed at Cobb Rd and Jefferson St. and at Broad St. and Cortez Blvd. by June 15, 2009.
What this means to those who run red lights, is that photographs will be taken by the cameras, twice; once when the vehicle approaches the light and again when the vehicle runs through the light. A video will also be taken for the motorist to watch online. After an officer reviews the evidence to determine whether or not the motorist did indeed break the law, the driver will be sent a ticket in the mail.
So for all you red light runners out there, the Brooksville City Police have a new set of eyes watching you!

Last week 3 brush fires were reported, making the grand total up to 77 brush fires since the ban was put into effect in January. 640 acres were burned down over the weekend in eastern Hernando County and the Withlacoochee State Forest, resulting in shutting down a section of SR 50, due to the smoke, yesterday. The fire has been subdued for the time being, however, officials expect it to continue to smolder for the next couple of weeks.
Despite the many warnings and citations that can result in a $500 fine and 60 days in jail, the Citrus County Fire Rescue Service stated on Monday, March 23, 2009 that during the prior week, 36 illegal burns were reported! Residents in the area are urged to follow the rules of the burn ban, the dry conditions at this time can cause the smallest little spark to ignite a dangerous wildfire, that can rage out of control before you know it!
The only burning that is allowed at this time is in your BBQ! Have a burger and wait out the burn ban, the rains will be here soon enough!

March 14-21, 2009 is Springs Awareness Week! Citrus County and Hernando County are both blessed with some of the most beautiful springs in all of Florida, we as residents in the area need to do what we can to ensure that they stay that way! These springs are an important part of our ecosystem, supporting all forms of life that derive from this environment where saltwater and fresh water meet!
One of the problems that our springs are facing, is the storm water run-off that brings nasty fertilizers and chemicals into our beautiful waterways. As residents of these counties, it is our responsibility to ensure that this is no longer a problem for our environment. Taking small steps during Springs Awareness Week could be the boost needed to incorporate change into our daily habits!
If you must use fertilizer, use only the slow-release kind and do not fertilize before a heavy rain. If any fertilizer is spilled while using the product, be sure to sweep up excess and put it back in the bag. Be sure to leave a 10 foot area around any bodies of water that will be a “NO FERTILIZER/PESTICIDE ZONE”!
On Friday, March 20, 2009, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. a free tour of Crystal River/King’s Bay Springshed will be hosted by the water management district officials. The tour will include a bus ride to Dames Caves and boat ride through Crystal River/King’s Bay, so be sure to wear some comfortable walking shoes and bring your lunch! Space is limited for the tour, so please call first to RSVP 1-800-423-1476 ext. 4756.
On Saturday, the last day of Springs Awareness Week, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. the Citrus County master gardener volunteers will be setting up an “Ask an expert” booth at the Home Depot, located at 70 N. Suncoast Blvd. (U.S. 19) in Crystal River.
We need to all do our part to keep Citrus and Hernando County’s springs clean and healthy.
