With the surmounting number of foreclosures, many non-profit organizations and other experts in the field are working over time to help homeowners remain in their homes and avoid contact with the foreclosure crisis.

One of the first steps that you can take when you believe your home is slipping into foreclosure is to contact your attorney or legal aid office, they should be able to steer you in the right direction.

The Homeownership Preservation Foundation offers an assistance number that allows you to speak with a counselor 24 hours a day. By calling 888-995-HOPE you will have access to financial counselors that will offer assistance to help you get back on track.

Look up your closest NeighborWorks organizations, they provide reputable counseling that can help you avoid foreclosure.

A list of counselors is provided on the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) website. You can reach them by phone at 800-569-4287 or TDD 800-877-8339.

Be on the lookout for counselors and assistance that is advertising “assistance for a small fee”, this is more than likely a scam. There are many scam artists out there looking to take advantage of desperate homeowners looking for a way out, DON’T BE A VICTIM, it is best to start with the above reputable organizations that truly want to help you.
