March 20, 2010 will not only mark the first day of spring, but will be the kick off the Annual Fort Cooper Days, hosted by the Friends of Fort Cooper! Once used as a place to house the wounded soldiers of the Second Seminole War back in the mid-1800’s, today Fort Cooper is preserved as a State Park, offering a refuge for many plants and animals, as well as a place to enjoy fishing, swimming, hiking and camping.
The Fort Cooper Days celebration will consist of two days full of living history, battle re-enactments, live music and arts and crafts such as, grinding corn, blacksmithing, spinning and weaving. Food and drink will also be provided.
Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $1.00 for children between the ages of 6-17, children under 6 are free! Located off US 41 on S. Old Floral City Rd. in Citrus County, Florida, Fort Cooper Days will be celebrated between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Battle re-enactments are held both Saturday and Sunday between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. According to Dianne Drye, park ranger and event coordinator, “We recommend getting to the battle site at least 45 minutes before the battle; it’s a good 20-minute walk to the fort site with limited seating.”
